The Red Line of the DC Metro

First opened March 29, 1976, the Red Line of the Washington Metro is a rapid rail transit service operating between 27 stations in Montgomery County, Maryland and the District of Columbia. It is a primary line through downtown Washington, and is the oldest and busiest line in the system. It forms a long narrow U capped by its terminal stations at Shady Grove and Glenmont. It is the only line which normally does not share its track with any other line. The Red Line services seven universities, the downtown business district, various museums and concert halls, several diverse shopping districts, every type of restaurant you can possibly imagine, and some of D.C.'s most popular inner-city and suburban neighborhoods including the West End, Dupont Circle, NOMA, Brookland, Adams Morgan, Woodley Park, Cleveland Park, Cathedral Hts., Connecticut Ave., Chevy Chase-DC, Chevy Chase-Maryland, Eckington, Friendship Hts., AU Park-Tenleytown, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Wheaton-Kensington & Union Station/Capitol Hill NE.  For more information about neighborhoods along the Red Line, check out the Featured Red Line Neighborhood under NEIGHBORHOODS on this site.
